Cold Weather Self Care

While some people love the summer there are a great number of people that not only enjoy the winter months but enjoy being in the great outdoors during such weather. In weather that is subzero, however there are things that a person must do to ensure that they stay healthy and safe.

The elderly and young children are very vulnerable to the cold temperatures of outdoors and should take the necessary precautions before the take part in any outdoor activities. This is mostly due to maintaining their own warm body temperature issues and should limit any of this time spend safely. Short increments coupled with a warm place to quickly warm up can make the transition very safe and in a few minutes. Another reason this is important is because they might not realize they are in a danger zone until a crisis materializes.

Individual tolerance is a important factor for each person when spending time in the cold weather outdoors and this is important for anyone to remember because it is hard to judge how a person is dealing with the effects of cold weather. Normal body temperature and the amount of body fat are significant factors that must be considered how the outdoor temperatures can cause problems for any individual while participating in outdoor activities.

Planning to spend time in the cold means preparing in advance for the amount of time that you will be spending outside. This means of course, covering up as much exposed skin as possible especially focusing on extremities and other areas that can be highly susceptible to the cold. Keeping skin covered can significantly reduce the chance of getting a windburn or frostbite especially on the face and neck. To help cover these regions one should consider wearing a hat that not only covers the top of the head and ears but that also covers a large portion of the neck and face as well. Those that offer just two eye slits are usually best.

The great outdoors can be a lot of fun anytime, but is wise to better prepare your outing and stay as safe as possible. Take the necessary precautions, cover up and dress the part and make sure that you stay hydrated; this is often overlooked as being as important as the other precautions. Just these small things can make significant differences in staying cold weather healthy and safe.
