The Truth About Cigarette Smoke

Everyone should know by now that cigarette smoke is bad for you, but what many people may not realize is just how many carcinogens are found in cigarette smoke. Some of the more common names of these carcinogens are hydrogen cyanide, which is used to make chemical weapons, arsenic, which is used in pesticides, and carbon monoxide, which is found in car exhaust. Secondhand Smoke

Secondhand smoke negatively affects the health of infants, children and adults, causing respiratory infections and lung cancer. According to the CDC, the exposure of secondhand smoke can increase the risk of developing heart disease by 25 to 30 percent for nonsmokers.

Legislators across the country have been enacting new laws to decrease smoking in public. A major thrust of this movement is a heightened awareness of the harmful chemicals found in cigarettes such as acrylonitrile.

The Health Protection Agency says that acrylonitrile is not found in nature. It is made through an industrial process in which propylene is mixed with ammonia and oxygen with the help of a catalyst. Plastics and resins commonly use the chemical as an ingredient in the development process.

According to the World Health Organization, smoking is likely the largest source of nonoccupational contact with the chemical. There are roughly 1 to 2 mg of acrylonitrile in every 100 cigarettes. If only 10 percent is absorbed through smoking, it would still equal 20 to 40 μg or 20/1,000 to 40/1,000 of a mg.

The Environmental Protection Agency has listed acrylonitrile as a group B1 cancer-causing agent. Group B1 means there is sufficient and probable evidence that a material will cause cancer in humans at the amount absorbed.

It is gratifying that a nationwide ban on smoking in public places could result in 18,596 fewer hospital visits due to heart attacks and $92 million in savings for hospital costs, according to a Henry Ford Hospital study.

What you need to do is talk to the subconscious mind, and convince it that it no longer needs to smoke. This is where hypnotherapy can greatly help.
When most people begin smoking, they usually cough, and feeling sick and dizzy. The coughing is caused by your lungs' defense system trying to get rid of a foreign matter. The dizziness was caused because of the poison that you system was receiving.

How Do I Quit Smoking and Stay Quit Long Term?

American author Mark Twain once said, "Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it hundreds of times." If you've been smoking for any length of time, you've probably already quit multiple times yourself, and you recognize the grain of truth behind Mark Twain's quip.

I smoked for 35 years and I quit too many times to count. I tried everything from cold turkey to hypnosis to nicotine replacement therapy to prescription drugs like Zyban. But every time I quit, I eventually went back to smoking.

Until the last time.

In the fall of 2001, I was having a lot of trouble breathing, and I finally went to my doctor about it. I was diagnosed with emphysema in November of that year, and my doctor told me that if I continued to smoke, the emphysema would get worse until I'd have to be on oxygen all day just to be able to breathe. And if I continued to smoke after that, eventually, even the oxygen wouldn't help any more, and I'd die, gasping for breath like someone was holding a pillow over my face.

I didn't want that to happen, so I vowed to quit smoking and stay quit for the rest of my life. I smoked my last cigarette on November 19th, 2001, and I've never looked back.

How do you quit smoking? That's really the easiest part, and there are lots of resources that can show you exactly how to do it. The program that I used in November of 2001 was the American Lung Association's "Freedom From Smoking" Online program. It's still available, it's very reasonably priced, and it's an excellent program.

Other good resources are Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" (available as a free download from many sites) and Patricia Allison's "Hooked But Not Helpless" (you can still get used copies on Amazon, and you may be lucky enough to find a copy at your local library).

How do you stay quit, long-term? That's the hardest part for most of us, but I've found that there are a couple of things you can do that will greatly increase your chances of success:

First, find a community of people who are either quit, or are in the process of quitting, and ask for support when you need it. You may be able to find a local support group; many hospitals, churches, and civic organizations sponsor such groups. The main problem with this option is that, even in a big city, it will likely be just a handful of people, and everybody has other commitments, so you may not be able to find the support you need at the exact moment you need it.

That's why I believe online communities are a better option: the larger forums have members from all over the world, so chances are good that you'll be able to find the support you need, when you need it, any time, day or night.

Second, and even more important in my opinion: offer your help to others who need it. You may think (especially when you're first starting out) that you don't have much to offer. But sometimes, the best support in the world is just knowing that you're not alone in going through a difficult challenge. Maybe all you can say is, "Hey, I know what you're going through; I'm going through it myself." But maybe that's the one thing that will make the difference between somebody giving up or deciding to hang in there.

Never underestimate the power of support, and remember: it's every bit as valuable to give as it is to receive.

How To Quit Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking cigarettes is a habit that is hard to get over with for most people. Just like any other form of addiction, smoking cigarettes causes your body to develop a dependency on a particular chemical, in this case nicotine. Nicotine patches can help you get rid of smoking cigarettes but it doesn't get rid of your dependency on nicotine and that's why it doesn't work for many people as it still essentially the same.

So what do you need to do? Easy! All you need to do is what rehabilitation centers have been doing for years - get rid of your dependency on nicotine. But how?

Believe it or not, the human body is capable of healing itself and putting itself back to normal operation. All it needs is time to heal. In other words, you need to give it a rest but unless you isolate yourself, doing that is not easy - but it can be done!

Start with motivation.

Find a reason for you to quit smoking. It can be your children, your partner, your parents, your friends or yourself. Think of how you smell when you smoke. Think of the future of your loved ones if your health begins to deteriorate. Think of how they will feel. Think of the example you're setting for your kids. Think of the second hand smoke that your loved ones are inhaling. These begins to motivate you.

The next step is deciding...

After finding the right motivation or motivations (you can have more than one), tell yourself that you WILL stop smoking. This is a very important step if you really want to quit the nasty habit of inhaling smoke and nicotine into your body. Telling yourself that you will stop smoking reinforces your motivations and tells your brain that you don't want it anymore.

Then do it.

After you've motivated yourself and after you have decided to stop smoking, the next thing to do in the list is to actually do it. Throw away your cigarettes. Don't even take "one last puff" as that will defeat the purpose of doing it. Get rid of your cigarette lighters and matches. Throw away your ashtrays and clean your house to rid it of the smell of cigarettes. Then have a good hygiene. Take a bath, brush your teeth and gargle mouthwash. Visiting your dentist is also great. If your dentist is a smoker then find another one.

Lastly, maintain it.

This is the hardest part. A surge of emotion can lead you to do all that I've mentioned before but maintaining it would be the toughest. As your emotions begin to fade, you will find yourself going back to the bad habit primarily because your body has not been given enough time to heal itself yet. Usually, it takes a month or two for it to totally heal. Sometimes even more. This makes maintenance very important.

Some of the stuff you can do to maintain your decision and actions is to reward yourself. Buy yourself some icecream. Go to the park, watch a movie with your family. Face the mirror and tell yourself how you like much better now. Smile in the mirror – a simple smile reinforces your actions. Keep on rewarding yourself but NEVER reward yourself with smoking, even with a single puff or with anything related to it. I've seen people in the maintenance period fail simply because they "smoked just one puff" to reward themselves. That one puff tells your brain that smoking is good because you considered it as a reward and the cycle starts all over again.

There is an audio book that will guide you through these steps and remind you of what you need to do. It's not expensive so I recommend buying it as it will help you a lot. Think of it as taking the extra mile that makes you a winner.

There you go. If you follow these simple steps then you will soon find yourself healthier and wealthier because you chose not to smoke and took action.

Why Quit Smoking

Most smokers at some stage have asked the question, why quit smoking? In fact surveys show that 70% of current smokers would like to quit. But how is the smoker thinking about quitting going to tackle the process? This is an important question as there are a bewildering number of quit aids and programs available. But the methods available to help you quit smoking will have to wait for another article. In this article I am specifically concerned with the important question, why quit smoking?

Why Quit Smoking: The List

It's a good idea to make a list of all the reasons why you should quit. It will act as inspiration during the dark times of nicotine cravings. Keep it close by and when the going gets tough take it out and read the contents out loud. What follows is my own personal why quit smoking list. It helped steady my resolve when I was ready to give in to the deadly enemy, nicotine addiction.

Why Quit Smoking: Health

This is the big number one on my why quit smoking list- smoking is hazardous to your health. There is no way of getting round the fact that 50% of smokers will be killed by their deadly habit. The list of diseases directly attributable to smoking is a long one. When we think of cancer and smoking we think of lung cancer. And indeed lung cancer is the big killer of smokers. It is estimated that 1 in 8 long term smokers will develop lung cancer. Lung cancer is a terrible disease and only 5% of those diagnosed will be still around 5 years later. Smoking also increases the risk for mouth cancers and cancers of the food pipe. But it is not just parts of the body in direct contact with the smoke that can develop cancer. Cancer can also occur at remote sites, such as the bladder and pancreas.

The poisonous chemicals and tar present in tobacco smoke directly injure lung tissue. This can lead to a progressive degeneration of the lung, called emphysema. Over time the air sacs in the lung, responsible for oxygen absorption, become destroyed leaving the sufferer gasping to draw breath. There is no cure and the only relief is to stop smoking. Smokers are also at risk of developing heart and vascular disease. The carbon monoxide in smoke causes the blood vessel walls to become 'sticky' thus increasing the possibility of a blood clot resulting in a blockage. Depending on where the blockage occurs, the smoker may suffer a stroke, heart attack, or even gangrene of the limbs. Has this smoking induced list of horrors made you stub out your last cigarette yet? The good news is once you stop smoking the body starts to heal and your relative risk for smoking related diseases starts to steadily decrease.

Why Quit Smoking: The Money

My second item on the why quit smoking list, is money. Quitting is like getting a pay rise and a tax exempt pay rise at that. Within a year you will find that you have saved a tidy sum. Sadly, it is often those that can least afford the habit that continue to smoke. Nevertheless, no matter what your financial status, smoking is becoming an increasing expensive pastime due to government tax hikes.

Why Quit Smoking: Social Pariah

The third thing to be considered on my why quit smoking list is the social consequences. I don't know if you have noticed but not that many people smoke these days; it has become a minority habit with just over 20% of the adult population being classified as smokers, at least in the developed world. Everyone is aware of the dangers of second hand smoke and are jealous about guarding their own and children's health. Smokers are no longer tolerated in the workplace, restaurant and bar; just about every public area is off limits to smokers. Bans are even being implemented in municipal areas, such as parks.

Why Quit Smoking: Because You Smell

It's really no fun being a smoker these days, which brings me to the fourth item on my why quit smoking list. I'll state the obvious: smokers stink. You can usually smell that someone is a smoker. Even if you can't smell it on their breath you can smell the distinctive pungent odour on their clothes and even on their hair. I suspect that few smokers really appreciate how bad they smell, or perhaps they don't care. As a smoker you are a drug addict and personal hygiene will always come second place to the addiction.

Why Quit Smoking: The Bits I've Left Out

The final item, or items, on my quit smoking list is a mixed collection that don't neatly fit into the other categories. Well to be honest I could have placed the following in the 'health category' but for no particular reason they've ended up in the 'odds and sods' section on my list. This one's for the men in the audience: It's official; smoking causes impotence resulting in the inability to obtain or sustain an erection. And sexual and reproductive problems are not just confined to men. Women may experience decreased fertility and therefore have difficulty in conceiving. So, I've come to the final point of my personal why quit smoking list: Smoking damages the collagen in your skin. What this means in practical terms is that the toxins present in tobacco smoke damage the elastic fibres in the skin causing premature wrinkles. Doctors have for some time been able to recognise a characteristic 'smokers face'. Apart from the sallow complexion, regular smokers can be recognised by their 'pucker mouths' and the deeply etched lines around the eyes.

So that's my particular why quit smoking list. Yours may differ to some extent but I'm sure that the main items of health and money will feature somewhere. Anyway, the best of luck with your own list. And in all the excitement don't forget to quit smoking- even if it takes more than one attempt.

Can I get out of the smoking trap?

If the smoking dependency is just a trap, and you can count it is, the only way to get away from it is knowing how to do that!
But why does people, actually, smoke?

Here is the key to understand...

To become a non-smoker you have to start with learning why you started smoking.
The long phase of smoking, the failures in the cease attempt, all of that made me suppose that I will never have the strength to cease for real!

Rather than learn how to go out from the trammel I was, unbelievable but truthful, dropping into the entrap more and further.
Every time, in fact, I failed to quit. I truly commence to be convinced that cease smoking was just impossible!

One day, oh gorgeous that day, I woke up and, thanks to all the examining and the "study" I've done, I started to look at the whole "smoking addiction" on a different level!

Why people smoke?

It is hard to stop, even more in "this" particular period of my life

Smoking provokes cancer... good everybody has to die of something sooner or later

...some examples...These are only lies, the smoker uses to try to make credible what cannot never be!

No human being can in fact smoke a cigarette without a long phase of training; you recognize it well, since it is not a thing that our being asks!

The question is all in that:

Why the smoking dependence catch so a lot of people?

Only one cause:

So many people that contribute that example!

Ok, I was, and I am even now, somebody who does not wish to adopt the tendency.
Beside, the world's patterns are so powerful to force everybody to do something that is impossible to take a real free choice!

In all of that there is the ensnare, we cannot know why we truly like this or that, in fact we don't, but the common sense says:"yes you have to...".Is this the meaning of "freedom of idea"?
The same dependence effect, from a chemical level, will make all this even heavier.
Nevertheless, the nicotine is a real drug, but on the other hand its detachment effects are very tiny, this means we can each time get out of it!

More or less 3 weeks is the normal cycle for a quitting smoking timeline, furthermore in this cycle we will stand to very small and trouble less side outcomes.

Since ceasing smoking IS NOT hard, it is merely to hold off the fearfulness to quit for real that could be!
So, why was I so afraid?
... Save a lot of money?
... Be free from all the bondage that the cigarettes coerce us to live every day?
... Begin to figure my life without all that potential horrific diseases?

Of course not...

So... why do so many people smoke?

Actually, I am no longer a smoker...I cannot remember even one of these false excuses that I was usual saying...

Six Steps To Quit Smoking

Many smokers regret their inability to Quit Smoking, although some are eager to blame their hacking cough on a persistent summer cold or their high blood pressure on the stress of daily life. Such smokers could not face the fact that their real problem is smoking.

Most smokers begin in adolescence, when the possibilities of illness and death may appear too remote to be real. The teenager lights up occasionally because his or her friends do. Cigarettes have become a symbol of swaggering maturity or a support against outward signs of shyness or awkwardness in social situations. Moreover, from occasional cigarette smoking without inhibition to heavy smoking usually occurs so gradual, that young people never quite realize when they actually became "hooked". If you are a smoker and have adolescent or preadolescent children, you can at least set them a good example by quitting now. But remember that moralizing or preaching is not likely to be productive since adolescents are rebels by nature. Tell them the fact smoking is an expensive habit, in terms of both money and health.

Although all health risks associated with smoking decrease as soon as you stop smoking, no matter how long you have been smoking. Your chances of having a heart attack drop rapidly. After 5 non-smoking years, the risk of premature death from smoking related diseases is almost reduced. After 15 years the risk has all but disappeared. Research about smoking indicates that while nearly four out of five smokers want to quit, only about a quarter finally give up the habit. However, most of those who fail to stop smoking are those who are not willing to pay the price.

If you really want to Quit Smoking, I suggest you follow the following steps.

Step one: Analyze your smoking habit. Prepare a chart of cigarette you usually smoke in 24 hour period, along with the times when you almost automatically light up, such as with every cup of coffee, after every meal, or as you begin the day's work. Give your self 2 or 3 weeks in which to study when and why you "need" cigarettes, so that you actually pay attention to every puff you take.

Step two: Make up your mind there will be no turning back. List all the reasons you want to stop smoking, including all the good things that will happen when you have Quit Smoking. For instance, you will probably be better able to taste your food and you may have no morning cough. You need to convince your self that the effort is worth making before you start.

Step three: Name the day, circle it on your calendar, and give up totally on that day. This is the most successful and the long run, least painful way to break the smoking habit. It helps if family members or close friends can act together, giving up on the same day and sustaining one another through the difficult days. It may help to choose a time when your usual routine is being changed for another reason {for example, just as you go on a vacation}.
